Why Kick The Bar?
Kicking the bar at the end of the promenade at the bottom of Constitution Hill is a good luck tradition here in Aberystwyth.
It has been a tradition since at least the 1800s and by now the exact origin has been long forgotten. Stories connected to the ritual range from the warding off the ghosts lingering from the deathly gallows that once stood on the seafront, to bored young men waiting for their dates to join them for a night out on the town. Today more than anything, it is meant to bring good luck. Students at Aberystwyth University hoping to pass their exams, runners training for marathons, in Aberystwyth, we take a moment to stop and kick the bar.
When choosing a name for this location and production business Kick The Bar not only represents the area, but the name also matches our aspiration to break down the barriers of rural film production and maybe it will bring luck to this venture too.
